Informacion del curso
* understanding the sociology of water management and collective choice agreements.
* globalization: its political, economic, social, and cultural aspects.
* conceptual tools for understanding water conflicts and their resolution.
* case studies: US, Britain, Latin America, Asia, including comparisons.
* ways to avoid or resolve such conflicts: participation, consultation, stakeholder analysis and involvement, institutional change.

On successful completion of this module the delegate will be able to:

1. explain and use key concepts in the sociological understanding of conflict over water and other natural resources, and link these to existing disputes;
2. understand the origins of the major policy approaches to water management and be familiar with the theoretical arguments that are used to justify them;
3. analyse cases of water struggles in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East, especially as outcomes of existing management policies, also specifying some of their other causes;
4. identify the factors, processes and events that sometimes lead to successful conflict resolution, focusing especially on relations between institutions and stakeholders;
5. link various processes of ‘globalization’, as economic and political drivers, to the ongoing debate about new policies for water management, and incorporate climate change as perhaps the most important of these.
